Mykonos

Whitewashed Chora, sandy bays and windmills above the sea

Get to know Mykonos

mikonos

Mykonos offers two very different starting points for a holiday: Chora for evenings on foot, and the bays for days organised around the sea. In the town and port area, compare the centre with Tourlos and Agios Stefanos. In the southwest, Ornos and Agios Ioannis put the beach at the heart of the day, while an Aleomandra address calls for a closer look at the route to the water.

The southern and eastern coast brings more choices. Platis Gialos combines beach restaurants with boat connections to other shores; Psarou and Paraga add a beach-club setting. Elia, Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis offer different coastal routines. Inland, Ano Mera has its square and monastery, while Panormos, Ftelia and Agios Sostis give the north its own character.

Where to stay in Mykonos? We would begin with the evening you want, then compare villas and hotels in Mykonos within that area. A particular beach, village or street matters more than a broad promise about the island.

The villas and hotels we chose in Mykonos

Of every stay in Mykonos, these are the ones we would book for ourselves.

Where to stay in Mykonos?

First, choose the area that suits you

Choosing between Chora, Ornos and Ano Mera means choosing a daily routine. Think about whether you want dinner on foot, a stay centred on one beach, or a different bay each day. The accommodation address connects those decisions.

We compare four geographical parts of Mykonos: town and port, the southwest, the southern and eastern coast, and the interior and north. Our preference is to choose the part of the island first, then examine the particular village, beach and journey home.

    Town and Port

Chora’s lanes, Little Venice and Tourlos port, with Agios Stefanos beach further north.

Chora gathers the island’s whitewashed lanes, shops and restaurants around Little Venice and the windmills. North of town, Tourlos is associated with the New Port, followed by Agios Stefanos beach. Megali Ammos offers a coastal alternative south of the centre.

We would begin here if wandering through town matters as much as swimming. A central Chora address puts the town experience first; Tourlos brings port logistics into the decision. Agios Stefanos and Megali Ammos make the beach a stronger part of the plan.

The Old Port and New Port are separate places. Match your arrival point, accommodation entrance and evening plans before choosing among these nearby but different bases.

  • Ornos bay from above

    Southwest Mykonos

Ornos bay, Agios Ioannis beach and Aleomandra addresses, with waterfront dining and Delos views.

Ornos and Agios Ioannis anchor the southwest. Ornos concentrates a sandy beach and restaurants around its bay; Agios Ioannis looks towards Delos. Aleomandra extends the comparison to accommodation on the peninsula, where the individual address deserves particular attention.

This is a useful starting point for a beach-led holiday. Compare somewhere close to Ornos dining with an Agios Ioannis beach address or a house in Aleomandra. Couples and families can use the same comparison, then judge the actual layout and access they need.

Ornos and Agios Ioannis appear on the bus operator’s Fabrika route. Confirm service for your dates and the final journey from the stop; the peninsula name alone does not establish a convenient beach walk.

  • Platis Gialos beach

    Southern and Eastern Coast

Platis Gialos, Elia and Kalo Livadi bring beaches and dining; Kalafatis adds windsurfing.

From Platis Gialos and Paraga to Elia, Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis, this coastline offers several different beach routines. Platis Gialos combines restaurants with water-taxi connections. Paraga has a beach-club setting, while further east Elia and Kalo Livadi offer broad bays and Kalafatis is associated with windsurfing.

Choose Platis Gialos when you like the idea of leaving the beach by boat to explore another. Compare Elia and Kalo Livadi for a stay centred on their own shores, and Kalafatis when time on the water is a priority.

Boat and bus operation needs checking for your dates. We would choose a beach you want to spend time at in its own right, then add excursions once the outward and return journeys are confirmed.

  • Agios Sostis bay

    Interior and North

Ano Mera square and Tourliani monastery, Panormos bay and Ftelia windsurfing offer different routines.

Inland Ano Mera centres on its square and Panagia Tourliani monastery. To the north, Panormos, Agios Sostis and Ftelia offer different coastal settings: beach restaurants and a club, a less serviced shore, and a bay associated with windsurfing. The village and beaches belong in one planning comparison, but they are distinct destinations.

Ano Mera suits a village-based plan with beach outings. At Panormos, look closely at nearby venues; at Ftelia, consider your interest in wind sports. Agios Sostis appeals when rows of loungers are not part of the beach day you want.

Plan the outward and return journeys to northern beaches. Start with the place that interests you, then connect it to dinner and your accommodation address.

Found the area that suits you?

Now choose exactly where to stay

Two nearby addresses can create very different holidays. Chora’s lanes put town evenings first; an Ornos beach address suggests swimming followed by dinner around the bay.

After choosing a region, choose the village or beach itself. Compare the journey from your accommodation to the place you expect to use each day, and the way home after dinner. That turns a promising point on the map into a considered base.

  • Mykonos town harbour

    Mykonos Town (Mykonos)

For couples and friends who enjoy town lanes, restaurants and waterfront evenings

Chora is Mykonos’s main town, with Little Venice, windmills and restaurant-lined lanes. Stay here when exploring town matters as much as beach time.

    Our tip

For dinners on foot, compare addresses within Chora and look at the particular lane. Plan your luggage arrival and beach journeys separately from evening walks.

  • Tourlos bay and port

    Tourlos

For travellers considering the New Port area and planning town evenings separately

Tourlos is the settlement around Mykonos’s New Port, north of Chora. Consider it for port-oriented plans, with separate checks for town and beach access.

    Our tip

Match the port on your ferry ticket to the accommodation route. If you plan to dine in Chora, confirm the outward journey and evening return as well.

  • Agios Stefanos beach

    Agios Stefanos

For couples and families seeking a beach north of town with planned port and town trips

Agios Stefanos combines a beach, tavernas and accommodation north of Tourlos and Chora. Consider it for a coastal base with planned visits into town.

    Our tip

Compare the route to Agios Stefanos beach and your intended bus stop. A port-area location still needs a separate plan for dinner in Chora and the return.

  • Megali-Ammos-beach-Mykonos

    Megali Ammos

For couples and travellers comparing a beach address south of Mykonos Town’s centre

Megali Ammos is a beach and coastal neighbourhood south of Chora. Consider it for sea time and town visits, checking the precise route between them.

    Our tip

If both beach and Chora appeal, examine the actual routes to each from the accommodation. A position on the map does not establish a suitable walk.
