Get to know Lefkada

Lefkada has two very different coastal rhythms: long beaches below pale cliffs in the west, and greener bays and boating harbours in the east. Lefkada Town and the north suit travellers who want restaurants and evening walks. Around Nidri and Nikiana, the eastern coast works well for boat trips and relaxed waterfront days. Agios Nikitas and the villages above the western shore appeal to beach explorers, while southern Vasiliki is closely associated with windsurfing and Sivota with harbour-side dining.
The island is reached by road across a bridge from mainland Greece, with Aktion airport near Preveza. A car makes it easier to explore different shores, but the exact address matters just as much as the region. A hillside villa above a village may have an expansive view without offering an easy walk to dinner.
Where to stay in Lefkada comes down to the evenings as well as the beaches. We would first choose between town life, a waterfront village and a quieter hillside setting, then compare villas and hotels in Lefkada by their real access routes, not simply their distance from the sea.
The villas and hotels we chose in Lefkada
Of every stay in Lefkada, these are the ones we would book for ourselves.
Where to Stay in Lefkada?
First, choose the area that suits you best.
Choosing a base on Lefkada is about much more than picking a coast. The north has the main town and open beaches, the east has harbours and sheltered inlets, the west has dramatic cliff-backed shores, and the south combines sailing villages with windsurfing.
We suggest deciding how you want to spend your evenings before looking at properties. A central village address can mean dinner on foot; a villa above the same village may mean driving down and back. The best area depends on which of those experiences you prefer.

Lefkada Town and the north
Old town streets, a marina, open beaches and nearby coastal villages

The north combines Lefkada Town, its marina and old streets with open beaches such as Agios Ioannis and Gyra. The waterfront villages of Lygia and Kariotes have a quieter character than the island capital.
This is a useful base for a first visit, especially if you want shops, restaurants and a town atmosphere. A stay near Agios Ioannis feels more beach-oriented, while a central town address makes evening strolls simpler.
Before choosing, look at the actual route between your accommodation and the places you expect to visit on foot. A north-coast address does not necessarily mean you can walk into town.

The east coast
Green coves, boat jetties, waterfront tavernas and island excursions
Read more
On the east coast, Nikiana, Perigiali and Nidri sit between green slopes and sheltered water. Boats depart from Nidri towards nearby islands including Meganisi, while further south Poros leads down towards Mikros Gialos beach.
This side suits families, boating holidays and travellers who enjoy tavernas by the water. Nidri has a busier waterfront and excursion scene; Nikiana and Perigiali offer different settings within reach of it.
Many villas sit above the coastal road rather than beside it. Before booking, check the gradient and actual route to the nearest beach and restaurants, particularly if you want to spend evenings without driving.

The west coast
Pale cliffs, turquoise beaches, hillside villages and western sunsets
Read more
The western coast is defined by mountains dropping towards beaches beneath pale cliffs. Around Agios Nikitas are Milos and Kathisma; further south, Kalamitsi, Dragano and Athani lead towards Egremni and Porto Katsiki.
Choose this side if beaches, coastal scenery and sunsets are your priorities. Agios Nikitas has a compact village centre with places to eat, whereas the inland villages above the shore are better suited to a rural stay and drives down to the beach.
Some beaches involve long stairways or winding access roads. A property can appear close to the sea on a map yet be much farther away by road, so check the actual approach before booking.

The south and southern coast
A windsurfing bay, small harbours, waterfront tavernas and moored boats
Read more
Southern Lefkada includes the broad bay of Vasiliki, the windsurfing shore at Ponti and the smaller harbour of Sivota. Vasiliki has boats, waterfront tavernas and a beach closely associated with sailing sports. Sivota sits around a deep inlet with moored yachts and places to eat beside the water.
The south suits travellers who want their days organised around the sea. Vasiliki feels active and sporty, while Sivota is more about a small harbour and dinner by the boats.
The afternoon wind is an important part of Vasiliki Bay. If relaxed swimming matters more than windsurfing, compare the precise beach location and the exposure of your accommodation.
Found the area that suits you best?
Now, choose exactly where to stay.
Two places on the same Lefkada coast can lead to quite different holidays. Nidri centres on its waterfront and boat departures, while Nikiana is a smaller coastal village; in the west, Agios Nikitas is by the sea and Kalamitsi sits higher in the hills.
We suggest choosing a town around your evening plans, then checking whether the particular property really is within walking distance of the beach or restaurants.

A road bridge links the island with mainland Greece, so no ferry is needed when arriving by car. Aktion airport near Preveza is about 18 km from Lefkada Town.
Driving makes it easier to combine the western beaches, mountain villages and eastern harbours. For evenings on foot, stay in the centre of a settlement rather than simply somewhere in the same area.
Porto Katsiki and Egremni lie below cliffs and land access involves stairways. Check current access conditions before travelling.
June and September can feel less busy than the height of summer; July and August are high-demand months.
Look for Lefkadian salami and ladopita, a traditional olive-oil cake.
