Get to know Kefalonia

Kefalonia gives a holiday several possible centres: a town square, a northern harbour or a southern beach. Argostoli brings waterfront walks and Lithostroto's shops into the evening; Lassi shifts the focus towards Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos. When comparing hotels in Kefalonia, start with the place you would like to return to after swimming.
Fiskardo's older waterfront buildings and Assos’s bay beneath a Venetian castle offer two distinct northern stays. On the east coast, Sami and Agia Efimia suit a plan built around that side of the island, with Melissani as an outing. Skala and Katelios give the southeast its own focus, while Lixouri belongs to a western-peninsula holiday.
Villas in Kefalonia deserve the same geographical care as a town hotel. Mount Ainos, Robola vineyards and the island's bays invite exploration, but the daily address matters most. We would choose where to stay in Kefalonia around a beach, an evening walk and a manageable set of outings, then compare individual rooms and houses.
The villas and hotels we chose in Kefalonia
Of every stay in Kefalonia, these are the ones we would book for ourselves.
Where to stay in Kefalonia?
First, choose the area that suits you
Kefalonia's regions make more sense as different daily plans than as a list of sights. Compare town and beach around Argostoli and Lassi, southern village addresses, the southeast around Skala and Katelios, or the eastern coast around Sami and Agia Efimia.
The north asks you to choose between individual harbour villages; Paliki gives the western peninsula its own itinerary. Start with your usual swimming and evening plans, then compare a specific address within the region. An excursion can cross the island without becoming the reason to sleep there.

Southwest Kefalonia
Town squares and waterfront walks, with Lassi’s sandy beaches as another base
Read more
Town and beach are separate choices here. Argostoli gathers around Vallianos Square, Lithostroto and its waterfront; Lassi centres a stay on beaches such as Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos. The shared planning region lets you compare those routines before choosing a room.
We would start here when the holiday needs both beach days and town evenings. An Argostoli address puts the town first; a Lassi address should be judged against a particular beach. Couples and families can compare either, depending on what they want to do each day.
Check the final walk, road crossings and return after dinner. A position near the capital does not establish a convenient walking route, and bus plans need the timetable for your actual dates.

Southern Kefalonia
Village addresses among olive groves, with southern beaches chosen one by one
Read more
Southern village stays are best compared through the address and the chosen beach. In Livathos, Svoronata combines village houses, gardens and olive groves, with Ammes, Avithos and Ai Helis among the coastal options to investigate. Each has its own approach from the accommodation.
We would consider this area for a holiday that gives the house and its surroundings a substantial part of the day. Families and friends should begin with room layout and shared space, then test the routine of leaving for swimming or dinner.
The villages and beaches do not form one continuous resort. Check the food shopping, evening return and route with beach equipment. Airport proximity is useful context, while the actual address determines how a stay works.

Southeast Kefalonia
Skala’s beach-led holiday and Katelios’s waterfront village in the island’s southeast
Read more
Skala and Katelios give southeastern Kefalonia two different centres. Skala's long beach makes swimming a clear starting point for the plan. Katelios brings a fishing-village waterfront and meals beside the shore into the comparison, with a different settlement scale.
We would choose the southeast when the intention is to spend several days locally, adding selected outings rather than crossing the island each morning. Couples and families can compare a particular beach routine in either village. The right choice depends on the address and evening plans.
Establish whether accommodation is within the settlement or beyond it, and check where you will eat. Coastal services vary by business and season. Treat northern and eastern excursions as deliberate additions to a locally grounded holiday.

Eastern Kefalonia
Eastern harbours, a Melissani visit and Antisamos as a separate beach outing
Read more
Sami and Agia Efimia give eastern Kefalonia two harbour settings to compare. Sami combines its waterfront with a working port, while Agia Efimia centres another stay around a bay and moored boats. Melissani and Antisamos add outings rather than defining an accommodation address.
We would compare this region for a holiday spending several days on the eastern coast, with a cave visit and settlement evenings. A room by a harbour and a house outside the centre create different routines. Choose the place you want to return to before selecting excursions.
Check current arrangements for Melissani and plan the journey to Antisamos separately. For a sea arrival, confirm the actual port and onward transfer instead of treating every Kefalonia ferry as an arrival in Sami.

Northern Kefalonia
Fiskardo’s older harbour buildings and Assos’s bay beneath a Venetian castle
Read more
Fiskardo and Assos are distinct northern choices. Fiskardo retains waterfront buildings from before the 1953 earthquake, with boats and restaurants around its harbour. Assos gathers beside a bay beneath a Venetian castle, giving its village stay a different physical setting.
For a holiday shaped by the evening, we would compare the settlements themselves. Dinner around Fiskardo's harbour differs from time in Assos's square. A northern house may fit either plan, but its regional label does not establish a walk to the chosen village.
Map the accommodation, parking and luggage route before booking. Select a swimming beach separately and verify transport for your dates if you will not drive. The useful comparison is between two actual daily routines rather than two scenic photographs.

Paliki Peninsula
A western-peninsula holiday around Lixouri, with Xi and Petani as beach choices
Read more
Paliki gives western Kefalonia a holiday plan of its own. Lixouri sits across the Gulf of Argostoli, with a square and waterfront to shape the evening. Xi and Petani offer different coastal outings, so choosing a swimming beach deserves more thought than comparing water colours.
We would consider this region when western beaches and time in Lixouri are central to the stay. A town room can begin with evenings around the square; an outlying house calls for a different food and beach routine. Build that local plan before adding trips across the island.
If crossing the gulf is part of your itinerary, verify road and ferry options for the actual dates. Compare beach access and parking from the individual property rather than assuming every Paliki address works in the same way.
Found the area that suits you?
Now choose exactly where to stay
A region narrows the map, but a village determines the daily routine. Argostoli and Lassi share a planning area while offering different evenings; Fiskardo and Assos are separate places rather than one northern harbour.
Use these settlement pages to compare a chosen beach, dinner plans and the way back to your room. The village name helps you shortlist; the final address decides how the holiday works.

Argostoli
Couples and travellers who want town streets, a square and waterfront evenings
Argostoli, Kefalonia’s capital, combines Vallianos Square, Lithostroto and waterfront walks. Compare it for town evenings after beach outings.
Our tip
Map the walk to Argostoli’s square and waterfront, then plan your swimming beach. A town address beside the harbour does not establish beachfront access.

Lassi
Couples and families choosing a beach base with visits to Argostoli in the plan
Lassi is a beach resort area near Argostoli, known for Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos. Compare it when a chosen beach shapes your stay.
Our tip
Choose the Lassi beach first, then check the walk from your room and the evening return from Argostoli. Nearby on a map does not settle the route.

Svoronata
Couples and families comparing village surroundings and beaches in southern Kefalonia
Svoronata lies in southern Kefalonia’s Livathos area, among village houses and olive groves. Compare nearby Ammes, Avithos and Ai Helis beaches.
Our tip
Svoronata covers different addresses. Map your intended beach and dinner stop from the house; a southern village label does not establish a walk to the sea.

Skala
Families and couples planning several days around a beach and southeast village
Skala sits in southeastern Kefalonia beside a long beach, with places to eat in the settlement. Compare it for a locally focused coastal holiday.
Our tip
Check which stretch of Skala beach your accommodation serves and the route to dinner. An address beyond the centre can create a different daily routine.

Katelios
Couples and travellers who want a coastal village, small harbour and waterfront meals
Katelios is a fishing village in southeastern Kefalonia, with a small harbour and waterfront tavernas. Compare it when meals by the sea matter.
Our tip
Compare the route from your room to Katelios’s waterfront rather than the balcony view alone. Check water entry and daily conditions at your swimming spot.

Sami
Couples and travellers choosing a harbour base for days on Kefalonia’s east coast
Sami is a port town on Kefalonia’s east coast. Compare it for waterfront evenings, a Melissani visit and separately planned eastern beach outings.
Our tip
Confirm that your ferry actually arrives in Sami before arranging a transfer. For the stay, compare the waterfront walk and the separate route to Antisamos.

Agia Efimia
Couples and travellers who want bay and harbour evenings on Kefalonia’s east coast
Agia Efimia is a harbour settlement on Kefalonia’s east coast, set around a bay and moored boats. Compare it when waterfront evenings shape the stay.
Our tip
Establish whether your stay is beside Agia Efimia’s bay or outside the centre. Map the swimming spot and dinner address separately from your room.

Fiskardo
Couples and travellers who choose a stay around harbour buildings and village evenings
Fiskardo is a northern Kefalonia harbour village with buildings that survived the 1953 earthquake. Compare it for time around the waterfront.
Our tip
If Fiskardo harbour is the reason for your choice, trace the walk there and back from the room. A northern Kefalonia house may sit beyond the village.

Assos
Couples and travellers drawn to a bay village, a square and a Venetian castle above
Assos is a bay-side village in northern Kefalonia beneath a Venetian castle. Compare it for village walks, square-side meals and a distinct coastal setting.
Our tip
Check the room-to-square and bay routes in Assos, including parking and luggage drop-off. Plan the castle ascent as an outing separate from daily room access.

Lixouri
Couples and families planning a Paliki holiday with town evenings as part of the stay
Lixouri sits on Paliki across the gulf from Argostoli. Its square and waterfront give a town focus to a holiday in western Kefalonia.
Our tip
Choose Lixouri around a Paliki itinerary, then map the beach journey. If crossing to Argostoli, verify the road or ferry plan for your own travel dates.

Good to know before you go to Kefalonia
Kefalonia Airport uses the code EFL. Check flights for your actual dates and arrange the onward route to your accommodation. For a ferry arrival, establish which island port the sailing uses before booking a transfer.
We recommend considering a car for an itinerary covering several regions. KTEL serves island settlements, with operating days and return journeys that vary by route and season. A stay without a car works best with a specific beach, local meals and planned transfers for selected outings.
Myrtos has white pebbles beneath high cliffs, and the water deepens quickly. Compare the approach, water entry and conditions on the day before choosing a family swimming stop. A photograph cannot settle that decision.
Look for Robola white wine, Kefalonian meat pie and mandoles, caramelised almonds. The vineyards and local cooking give a day on the island another focus alongside its harbours and beaches.

Questions about Kefalonia
Start with the daily plan: Argostoli for town evenings, Lassi for a beach-led stay near the capital, southern village addresses, Skala and Katelios in the southeast, Sami and Agia Efimia in the east, northern harbour villages or Lixouri on Paliki. Then compare individual addresses.
Compare Lassi when you want its beaches alongside visits to Argostoli. Skala works as the centre of a more locally focused southeast holiday. In either place, check the actual accommodation-to-beach route and where you will eat.
A local stay can be planned with an arrival transfer and selected organised outings. Before booking, verify the walks to food and swimming and the timetable for your own week, including the return. A route name alone does not establish a workable itinerary.
Both belong to a northern Kefalonia plan, but they are separate settlements. Compare evenings around Fiskardo harbour with Assos’s bay and village square, then establish exactly where your accommodation sits.
Choose the settlement and intended swimming beach first, then check the house address, bedroom layout, steps, parking and pool details. Confirm the booked category rather than inferring features from a general description of the area.
