Zakynthos

Southern sands, northern coves and an eastern harbour town

Get to know Zakynthos

Gerakas shore in Vasilikos

Zakynthos, also called Zante, brings together sandy shores, olive-growing countryside and a coastline cut by cliffs and sea caves. When comparing hotels in Zakynthos, the surrounding village matters as much as the room. Zakynthos Town gives couples squares and restaurants to explore on foot, while Tsilivi, Alykes and Alykanas put beach days at the centre of the plan. The northern harbour of Agios Nikolaos offers a different starting point for a villa stay and outings along the coast.

In the south, Laganas Bay combines an established nightlife resort with protected turtle nesting beaches. Vasilikos has several distinct beaches, including Banana and Gerakas, rather than a single seafront centre. Over in the southwest, Limni Keriou is a coastal settlement with a small harbour and a separate hill village inland.

Where to stay in Zakynthos depends on what you want outside your door. Start with the walk to dinner, the beach you will use and your transport plans. Our guide compares 6 planning regions before narrowing the choice to individual places.

The villas and hotels we chose in Zakynthos

Of every stay in Zakynthos, these are the ones we would book for ourselves.

Where to stay in Zakynthos?

First, choose the area that suits you

Start on the east coast with Zakynthos Town, then compare the resort villages towards Tsilivi and Alykes. The south divides between Laganas Bay and Vasilikos; the north and the southwestern Keri coast each deserve a separate transport plan.

We recommend choosing the everyday walk first: coffee and dinner in a village centre, or the route to a particular beach. When comparing villas in Zakynthos, check the actual address as carefully as the view. A hillside setting and a harbourfront stay can produce quite different days within the same region.

  • Zakynthos Town waterfront

    Central East Coast

Town squares and museums, Argassi’s coastal strip and cafés around the harbour

The eastern capital area brings together Solomos Square, Saint Mark’s Square, the harbourfront and Bochali hill above town. Southeast of the capital, Argassi offers a coastal resort setting with a stone bridge beside its beach. Start here if museums, squares and evenings out matter alongside time by the sea.

We would compare a central town address for walking to dinner with Argassi for a resort base and separate visits to the capital. Bochali adds the Venetian castle and a view over town, although its hilltop position changes the walk home.

KTEL lists an Argassi-to-town route. Check your actual street and room position, particularly near bars. A harbour view in town does not establish direct access to a swimming beach.

  • Tsilivi bay and resort

    Northeastern Coast

Sandy beaches, resort centres and tavernas in Tsilivi, Alykes and Alykanas

North of the capital, the eastern coast has several separate resort centres. Tsilivi is the beach associated with Planos; Alykes and Alykanas lie farther north. Sand, local dining and accommodation in and around the settlements make this a useful starting point for a beach-centred holiday.

We would compare these places for families and couples who want dinner choices as well as the sea. Tsilivi has restaurants and bars, while Alykes adds the setting of former salt pans behind its coast. Alykanas deserves its own address comparison rather than being treated as another name for Alykes.

KTEL lists Tsilivi and Alykes routes. Check the final walk and dated timetable; these resorts do not form one continuous pedestrian centre.

  • Laganas bay and resort

    Southern Bay

Southern sands, Laganas nightlife and protected turtle nesting beaches around the bay

On the southern coast, Laganas Bay contains two accommodation centres worth comparing separately. Laganas combines a sandy beach with an established bar and nightlife scene. Kalamaki occupies the eastern continuation of the shore. Parts of this coastline are loggerhead turtle nesting sites within the national marine park.

Start with Laganas if evenings out are central to the trip. For a day organised around a protected beach and dinner in the resort, compare Kalamaki addresses. In either case, inspect the actual street and room position rather than relying on a town-wide promise of quiet.

Protected shorelines have visiting restrictions. Follow signs and ranger guidance, keep clear of marked nests and check the permitted hours for your chosen beach.

  • Gerakas bay in Vasilikos

    Southeast Zakynthos

Separate beaches, olive-growing countryside and days around Banana, Gerakas and Porto Roma

Vasilikos spreads across the southeastern peninsula through greenery, accommodation addresses and roads leading to different beaches. Banana, Agios Nikolaos, Porto Roma and Gerakas are useful names to place on the map before choosing a house. This southern Agios Nikolaos beach is separate from the northern port of the same name.

We recommend comparing the peninsula for a holiday built around several beaches rather than a single town centre. Banana has dining and beach activities; Gerakas is a protected nesting shore. Choose your address around the beach you will actually use and your route to dinner.

KTEL lists a Vasilikos, Agios Nikolaos and Porto Roma route. Confirm the stop and final walk, and follow the visiting rules at Gerakas.

  • Northern Agios Nikolaos harbour

    Northern Zakynthos

A small harbour, hill villages and rocky coastline around Agios Nikolaos and Skinari

Northern Agios Nikolaos, in the Volimes area, links a small harbour with hillside addresses and roads towards Skinari and the Blue Caves. Coves, rocky stretches and inland villages distinguish this coast from the southern sand. Volimes and Askos help identify the correct northern setting when comparing accommodation.

We would look here for a villa holiday combining time at the house with planned drives or boat outings. A harbour setting and a hillside address offer different routes to meals and the water. The place name alone does not establish a walk to the quay.

Arrange transfers and returns before setting out. Blue Caves visits and Navagio outings are separate plans; an excursion advertisement does not establish permission to land at Navagio.

  • Myzithres rock and sea

    Southwest Zakynthos

Limni Keriou by the sea, hillside Keri and rocky western coves

Southwestern Zakynthos calls for a clear distinction between hillside Keri village and seaside Limni Keriou. Outings along this coast take in Keri’s sea caves and the Myzithres rocks, while western coves such as Porto Limnionas require their own journey. These are separate destinations rather than one continuous waterfront.

For accommodation, we would start with Limni Keriou if a small harbour, local beach and meals by the sea matter. Choose the hill village deliberately if you prefer that setting. Assess western beach approaches carefully when travelling with children or anyone avoiding steps.

Porto Limnionas is a rocky cove approached by steps. For boat outings from Keri, confirm the route, sea conditions and marine-park guidance around Marathonisi.

Found the area that suits you?

Now choose exactly where to stay

Choosing a region is only the first step. Zakynthos Town and Argassi offer different evenings, while Laganas and Kalamaki share a bay without offering the same daily routine.

The groups below compare actual places to stay. Think about the beach, dinner and the journey back to your accommodation, then check the individual address. A name on the same stretch of coast does not guarantee the same holiday.

  • Zakynthos Town waterfront

    Zakynthos Town

Couples and travellers who enjoy museums, town walks and dinner out

Zakynthos Town pairs an eastern harbour with squares, museums and cafés. Choose it for evenings on foot and a holiday with separately planned beach outings.

    Our tip

For evenings on foot, compare addresses around Solomos and Saint Mark’s squares. Check parking and your beach route separately from a harbour view.

  • Argassi stone bridge

    Argassi

Couples and travellers wanting a coastal resort with dining and town outings

Argassi sits southeast of Zakynthos Town, with a narrow beach, stone bridge and resort dining. It suits a coastal stay with outings to town and Skopos.

    Our tip

Compare the room’s position against bars and the road, then inspect your beach access. Arrange the return from town before planning an evening there.
