Northern Greece

Epirus lakes, Meteora rocks and evenings in Macedonia and Thrace

Get to know Northern Greece

Metsovo rooftops and mountains

A Northern Greece trip starts with regions rather than one hotel expected to serve the entire route. Zagori villages offer stone houses, bridges and Vikos Gorge; Meteora connects rocks and monasteries with Kalambaka and Kastraki; Thessaloniki suggests days of food, markets and waterfront walks. Ioannina and Metsovo add different Epirus bases, while Olympus supports another plan around the mountain and nearby villages.

Where to stay in Northern Greece depends on the day you want to return from. In Zagori, compare Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri and Kipoi; near Meteora, choose town or village; in Thessaloniki or Kavala, assess the street, parking and urban evening. Tzoumerka is a separate mountain area, not another name for Zagori's villages.

We would divide the stay when combining distant regions, allowing each its own time. Compare Northern Greece hotels and villas by address, roads and meals. A Thessaloniki-based route, family trip or single-base holiday needs a realistic local cluster rather than an assumption that one hotel conveniently covers the north.

Where to stay in Northern Greece: regions and bases

First, choose the area that suits you

Compare the base type first: Zagori villages for stone settlements, bridges and the Vikos setting; Ioannina for a lake city; Meteora for rocks and monasteries; or Thessaloniki for urban days. Metsovo, Olympus and Kavala suggest other directions rather than compulsory additions to every holiday.

The regions below help prioritise rather than create a checklist. Decide between a local single-base stay and a route changing accommodation. A separate Zagori guide compares Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri and Kipoi so you can move from a regional choice to an actual address.

  • Papigo and Astraka mountains

    Epirus

Zagori villages, Ioannina and Metsovo offer different mountain and city bases, compared around routes and daily plans

Zagori villages deserve a distinct place in a Northern Greece plan. Papigo and Aristi offer western starting points; Monodendri relates to the Vikos setting; Kipoi turns towards stone bridges. Choose a village around intended outings and evenings rather than mountain photographs alone. Viewpoints, village wandering and a gorge trek are different plans.

Ioannina offers a lake-city alternative beside Pamvotida and its castle; Metsovo provides another Pindus mountain base. They can share a holiday but are not Zagori neighbourhoods or interchangeable starting points. Assess Tzoumerka separately if it belongs in the trip.

Use the Zagori villages guide for detailed Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri and Kipoi comparisons. Check roads, parking, steps and meals, considering multiple bases when combining different parts of Epirus.

  • Kastraki and Meteora rocks

    Meteora

A town below the rocks and a village among them provide contrasting Meteora bases

Meteora's rocks and monasteries explain the visit, but accommodation belongs to two actual settlements. Kalambaka stands beneath the rocks with a town setting. Kastraki is a village beside the formations, bringing houses and streets into the rocky landscape as soon as you step outside. Individual rooms offer different outlooks.

We would compare Kalambaka when town services and meals matter, and Kastraki when the village and rocks should shape the stay. Either can give Meteora more room in the itinerary than a passing stop.

Confirm which monasteries open on your dates and what access involves. A balcony facing a rock does not establish a walking route to a monastery or an entrance without steps.

  • Palaios Panteleimonas village houses

    Olympus Foothills

Litochoro by the Enipeas gorge and stone-built Palaios Panteleimonas offer different foothill settings

Along the Olympus and Pieria corridor, distinguish a settlement at the mountain's foot from a village above the coast. Litochoro connects with the mouth of the Enipeas gorge and a maritime heritage alongside its mountain setting. Palaios Panteleimonas brings stone lanes, tiled roofs and views towards the Thermaic Gulf. Neither name establishes a waterfront room.

We would compare Litochoro for town streets alongside a specific nature plan, and Palaios Panteleimonas when village evenings take the lead. If swimming belongs in the holiday, plan the beach separately from the overnight address.

Olympus outings require a route matched to experience and actual conditions. In the stone village, establish parking, slopes and the luggage route to the door.

  • Thessaloniki waterfront from above

    Thessaloniki Area

Waterfront walks, markets and Ladadika make Thessaloniki a city choice shaped by the address

Thessaloniki gives northern Greece an urban holiday plan: waterfront walks, the White Tower, markets and places to eat. Ano Poli adds upper-city streets, while Ladadika offers another focus for dinner and an evening out. Decide which of those you want to reach on foot before comparing rooms on a map.

We would choose the city for several days of food, culture and streets, or as the urban part of a broader holiday. A day without driving elsewhere can still begin with coffee and continue through a market to the waterfront.

Check the street, room orientation and noise at the hours that matter. Establish parking if bringing a car, and distinguish a promenade address from accommodation chosen for a swimming beach.

  • Kavala Panagia across the water

    Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Kavala pairs harbour and hillside streets; Xanthi turns towards old-town architecture and tobacco heritage

East of Thessaloniki, Kavala and Xanthi offer different urban stays. Kavala combines a harbour, the Kamares aqueduct and the hillside Panagia old town. Inland Xanthi brings coloured facades, paved lanes and buildings connected with its tobacco-trading past. Choosing between them changes both the outlook and evening routine.

We would compare Kavala for a port city and walks climbing into the old quarter, and Xanthi when architecture and old-town streets lead the plan. Either can have its own overnight stay within an eastern itinerary.

In Kavala, establish the climb from the water to the accommodation. In Xanthi, check old-town access and parking. A city room does not establish an address beside a swimming beach.

Found the area that suits you?

Now choose exactly where to stay

The overnight settlement also shapes days spent locally. Ioannina and Metsovo offer different Epirus stays; Kalambaka and Kastraki are separate Meteora bases. Litochoro and Palaios Panteleimonas create different Olympus-area routines, while the eastern cities add choices of their own.

Compare each place around meals, walks and intended outings, then investigate the individual hotel or house. A broad map choice needs an address and a daily plan.

For Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri and Kipoi, compare the Zagori village stays guide.

  • Ioannina castle in daylight

    Ioannina

Couples and travellers seeking an Epirus lake city, castle and museums

Ioannina connects Lake Pamvotida with a castle, lanes and silversmithing heritage. An Epirus city base for culture, food and waterside time.

    Our tip

Compare the address with the castle and lake, checking parking and luggage access. A lake view does not establish a balcony or a level promenade route.

  • Metsovo rooftops and mountains

    Metsovo

Couples and travellers choosing a Pindus mountain village, stone houses and local food

Metsovo sits in the Pindus mountains, with stone houses, a central square and local cheese traditions shaping village days and evenings.

    Our tip

Establish parking and the luggage route to the door. For mountain outings, check the route and conditions for your dates rather than relying on the village name.
