Things to do in Fiskardo: a harbour day, lighthouse walk and food
Explore the harbour lanes, walk the short Faros trail and choose a seafront meal, with maps, seasonal restaurant details and one nearby beach.

Cave visits, an Argostoli morning, Assos, wine tasting and a farm meal: plan separate Kefalonia outings with maps and practical tips.
It is easy to fill a Kefalonia holiday with beaches. A day beginning underground, continuing through Argostoli or ending with a garden meal adds a different perspective: what the island grows, how its towns work and where people spend their evenings.
Choose separate outings rather than a single island-wide checklist: the caves and Sami in the east; Argostoli and its surroundings in the southwest; or the northern villages. Winding roads and distances matter. An overfilled itinerary can turn a promising day into one spent mostly in the car.
Keep our Kefalonia beach guide for swimming days. Here we focus on caves, towns, villages and local flavours. Our Kefalonia guide helps put possible accommodation bases in context.

Melissani lies near Karavomilos and Sami in eastern Kefalonia. A descending passage leads towards the lake, where you board a small rowing boat with a local boatman. Part of the cave roof is open to the sky and another section is covered. Moving between those spaces is central to the experience.
On suitable days, light from above intensifies the colour of the water. Around the middle of the day it can be particularly striking, but the effect depends on clouds, season and timing. Choose that light and you may also face a busier visit; consider another time if a quieter experience matters more, without expecting precisely the same photograph.
The boat ride is short, roughly fifteen minutes. Distinguish it from the whole visit, including arrival, queuing and reaching the boat. This is not a half-day cruise or a swimming stop. There are steps and a boat transfer, so check actual arrangements in advance if you have mobility requirements.

Drogarati is also in the Sami area but offers a different experience. You descend on foot into a large chamber of stalactites and stalagmites. After the water and daylight at Melissani, it provides a different sense of space and stone. Its acoustics are well known, but past concerts do not mean there will be a performance on your visit.
The stairs down also have to be climbed on the return. The interior is cooler than the summer outdoors and surfaces can be damp. Wear shoes with a dependable grip, avoid touching formations and stay on the permitted route. Anyone who finds stairs difficult should check suitability before buying visits to both caves.
Our planning check was on 5 November 2026. Cave opening hours change through the year, and winter access may require an arrangement. Ask the site or Municipality of Sami what is open on your date, when last entry is and what tickets cost. Summer opening hours in an older blog are not enough to plan an off-season outing.

Afterwards, continue to Sami for a working harbour and a meal beside the water. This can give the day a more pleasant pace than another long drive. Walk along the waterfront, compare menus and prices, and ask what has been prepared that day. Establish the unit price and portion before ordering anything sold by weight.

Kefalonia's capital offers a day you can enjoy on foot. Begin around the harbour, where fishing boats and produce and fish sellers are part of the morning scene. Think of it as a glimpse of a working town rather than a vast organised market with a fixed programme of stalls. Activity and produce vary, so see what is happening on the day.
Sea turtles sometimes appear in the water. If you see them, watch from the waterfront, without feeding, touching or putting a camera into the water. These are wild animals rather than a scheduled attraction. A morning visit does not guarantee a sighting.

Head inland to Lithostroto, the pedestrian shopping street. It is separate from the waterfront, and both deserve time. In a bakery or sweet shop, look for mandoles, sugar-coated almonds, and mandolato, a nougat-style confection. They are different sweets. Ask about ingredients and packaging if you are buying gifts.

De Bosset Bridge takes you over the water towards the opposite side of the bay and Koutavos lagoon. You do not need to cross the whole bridge to appreciate the view back to town. Choose the length of your walk according to heat, wind and energy. Later, return to the streets around Vallianos Square for a coffee or dinner as the town changes pace.

Gentilini Winery is in the Minies area on the road between Argostoli and the airport. Visits offer wine tastings and introductions in the winery garden. Choose a package according to your interests and ask about local grapes, including Robola.
Arrange the visit in advance. Tastings are seasonal, and the published 2026 visitor calendar ended in October; do not assume normal tastings operate in November. For a future holiday, confirm dates, duration and options for non-drinkers. Arrange a designated driver or transport before tasting. Gentilini Retreat accommodation is in a different location from the winery itself.

En Kefallinia Organic Farm Restaurant in Lakithra is an option for travellers interested in local food and farming. The restaurant sits on a farm with olive and citrus trees, with an emphasis on seasonal produce. Ask about a meal, and separately about a farm visit or arranged cooking activity.
Do not assume a cooking class is available to walk-in visitors every day. Some activities are tailored to groups and require booking. Ask what is offered on your date, whether it suits your group size and what the price includes. If Kefalonian meat pie, kreatopita, is offered, it is a chance to try something local beyond familiar salad and souvlaki.

Assos lies in northwestern Kefalonia, beside a bay below its fortified peninsula. Wander among the houses, sit by the water and leave time for lunch. If you want a walk, check access to the Venetian fortress, whose construction began in the late sixteenth century.

The climb is part of the outing, rather than a short level stroll from the car park. Bring water, wear suitable shoes and choose a time that works with the heat. Respect barriers or a closed gate. You can enjoy the village without climbing, especially if fitting it in would turn the rest of the day into a rush.

For another northern outing, our Fiskardo day guide covers the harbour, lighthouse walk and two restaurants. Give each village time rather than treating them as interchangeable photo stops.
One outing could pair Melissani, Drogarati and Sami. Another could focus on Argostoli's shops, walks and food. Add the winery or farm to a southern day once you have arranged the visit, and keep Assos and Fiskardo for the north. On a shorter holiday, select by your base and interests rather than trying to do everything.
A car gives more flexibility between areas. Without one, focus on a town day and investigate a transfer or cave tour with clear pickup and return arrangements. Check seasonal opening before making a special journey. Leave room for an unplanned coffee, a small shop or a meal that takes longer than expected.
Visit Melissani and Drogarati, explore Argostoli, discover Assos and Fiskardo, or arrange a wine tasting or farm meal. Divide the choices into separate regional outings.
Melissani is a cave lake visited by rowing boat. At Drogarati you descend on foot into a chamber of stalactites and stalagmites. Check steps and access according to your requirements at both.
Roughly fifteen minutes on the water. Allow longer for the whole visit, including arrival, queuing and reaching the boat. Leave extra time on busy days.
Around the middle of the day sunlight may intensify the water colour, depending on season and clouds. It is also popular then. Another time may suit visitors prioritising fewer crowds.
Do not assume a fixed daily opening. Hours change and winter visits may require an arrangement. Confirm opening and last entry for your date with the site or Municipality of Sami.
They sometimes appear around the harbour and bay, without a guaranteed sighting. Watch from shore without feeding, touching or putting cameras into the water.
Gentilini offers seasonal visits and tastings in the Minies area. Confirm dates and packages, and arrange a non-drinking driver or transfer. The winery is separate from Gentilini Retreat accommodation.
Not for every day: Argostoli can be explored on foot. A car adds flexibility between caves, villages and wineries. Without one, check tours, transfers or current public transport, including the return.
