Things to do in Crete

Updated

Bay with hillside houses, Crete

Old towns, coastal villages, beaches and shopping: a practical guide to exploring Crete by region.

Wondering what to do in Crete? Start with a few experiences near the part of the island you're exploring: wander through Chania's old harbour, spend time in Rethymno's old town, visit Knossos near Heraklion, or explore the bays around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Leave room for a beach, a long lunch or a change of plans. You don't need to fit everything into one trip.

We think Crete works best when you plan by region rather than collecting attractions from across the island. A good day might have one main stop and plenty of time to explore around it. Here are the places we'd start with, and how to decide which ones belong on your itinerary.

Chania: old town and harbour

Region: Western Crete | Best for: Wandering, food and town life

Chania's old harbour and surrounding lanes reward an unhurried visit. Walk along the waterfront, turn into the old town and find somewhere to sit for a meal. There's no need to treat every street as a sight to tick off.

We like keeping a town day separate from a day exploring the beaches further west. It gives you more time to enjoy both rather than rushing from one stop to another.

Good to know: If you're staying elsewhere on Crete, check the journey to Chania before adding it to an already full day.

Rethymno: a town worth slowing down for

Region: Central-western Crete | Best for: Old streets and a relaxed town visit

Rethymno is a good place to set aside time for the old town, a meal and a walk without a strict route. It's a different sort of day from one spent moving between beaches.

Its position between Chania and Heraklion can make it a useful stop while exploring more than one region. We'd still give the town time of its own rather than treating it as a quick break on the road.

SEASCAPE NOTE: If you're changing bases, see whether Rethymno fits naturally into the journey before planning a separate outing.

Heraklion and Knossos: history and city life

Region: Central Crete | Best for: Archaeology and city exploring

Knossos is a strong choice for anyone curious about Crete's ancient history. It offers a very different experience from the island's beaches and coastal towns.

You can pair it with time in Heraklion, but decide what matters most to you: the archaeological site, exploring the city or shopping. That way the day doesn't become a race between stops.

Good to know: Check official opening hours, ticket arrangements and visitor information before going to Knossos.

Agios Nikolaos and Elounda: eastern Crete by the water

Region: Eastern Crete | Best for: Bays and coastal towns

Agios Nikolaos and Elounda offer a day shaped by the coastline: time beside the bay, a walk through town and stops along the way. We like this part of Crete for a slower outing without a single major attraction setting the schedule.

Choose a handful of nearby stops rather than combining the east with faraway sights in the west. The island makes more sense when each region has time to breathe.

Good to know: If you're based in western Crete, check the actual journey before deciding whether an eastern day trip makes sense.

Shopping in Crete: where to start

Type: Shopping streets, markets and local products

For shopping in Crete, we'd start with the larger towns, particularly Heraklion and Chania. Alongside everyday shops, look out for local food products and small places where you might find something worth taking home.

Our preference is to add shopping to a town day rather than drive across the island specifically for it. If you're looking for a particular brand or shop, check its location and opening hours first.

Planning your Crete itinerary

Instead of building one long list of things to do in Crete, start with where you'll be based. Choose a town day in Chania or Rethymno, a history-focused day around Heraklion, or a coastal outing around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Add a beach only when it fits the route.

The Crete destination guide is a useful place to compare regions before deciding which parts of the island you want to explore.

Questions and answers

What is worth doing on a tour of Crete?

Choose a region and combine an old town, an archaeological site or a coastal village rather than trying to see the whole island in one day.

Which are the white villages of Crete?

The phrase does not refer to one official itinerary. If you want traditional villages, choose them by the region you're exploring and check the individual place names before setting out.

Where to shop in Crete?

Heraklion and Chania are good starting points for shopping, with opportunities to explore shops and local products during a town visit.

How many days in Crete is enough?

It depends on how many regions you want to explore; for a short trip, focus on one area rather than attempting to cover the whole island.

What to avoid in Crete?

Avoid planning attractions at opposite ends of the island on the same day without checking the driving times first.
